SSC exams marred by political turbulence

Thereport24.com, Dhaka:

The BNP-led 20-party alliance has again imposed a 72-hour general strike from Sunday amid the ongoing indefinite blockade.

The strike was announced in a statement signed by BNP joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi on Friday. He called on party activists to peacefully observe the strike.

The 72-hour strike comes after similar programmes announced twice in January while the ongoing blockade has been in force since January 6.

The blockade has seen losses of lives and properties but no step has been taken to resolve the crisis.

This year’s Secondary School Certificate (SSC) exams are scheduled to begin from February 2 across the country but the 72-hour strike has turned the fate of the large number of examinees uncertain.

The government presumably will take steps in light of the latest developments which has raised serious concern among examinees as well as parents.

We think the present situation should not be deemed one which is merely related to the law and order. Steps to resolve the political deadlock have to be taken as early as possible.

Failure to do so will bring dire consequences for the whole education system in the country.
